There’s nothing worse than buying your beagle an expensive chew that you thought would keep them busy for a while, only to find that it’s been devoured within seconds!
In this post, we’ll go over the benefits of dog chews, how to pick out the right one for your pup, and our Top 15 Long-Lasting Chews for Beagles.

Dog chews are a great way to be able to give your beagle that extra bit of exercise and mental stimulation they need. After all, chewing is completely natural and has plenty of benefits for them.
We’ve practically been through hundreds of different chews, and have a great understanding of what works, and what doesn’t when it comes to beagles specifically.
Some are just not worth the money, whilst others are a complete danger to beagles who have the tenacity to demolish every last inch of them!
In any case, we’ll share our honest opinion (including potential risks) of long-lasting dog chews for beagles.

4 Benefits of Dog Chews for Beagles
Chewing has many benefits for beagles and plays a key role in keeping them happy and healthy.
Some great reasons to keep your beagle busy on a chew are:
1. Provides Physical & Mental Stimulation
A well-known fact about beagles is that they are a high-energy breed, so providing them with long-lasting dog chews is an excellent way to keep their minds, paws, and jaws active.
2. Helps Prevent Destructive Chewing
Chewing is a natural instinct for beagles, whether on new toys, household furniture, or other items. Providing them with suitable chews helps to curb any unwanted or destructive chewing behaviors.

3. Relieve Stress and Anxiety
As beagles are commonly prone to suffering with separation anxiety, chew toys can help keep them calm and are an effective stress reliever for them.
4. Improves Dental Health
Chewing helps beagles maintain good dental and oral hygiene by removing and preventing the build-up of plaque and tartar, keeping their teeth and gums healthy.
6 Considerations When Selecting Beagle Chews
Choosing the right chew requires some consideration as not all are safe or suitable for beagles. Here’s what to consider for an appropriate beagle chew:
1. Beagle’s Age
Whilst adult beagles can handle almost any dog chew you throw at them, beagle puppies need more careful consideration.
Puppies should be given softer and more easily digestible chews to help with teething, (much like babies and toddlers) until they have developed a stronger digestive system and teeth.
The same applies once beagles have reached old age, as their systems start to slow down and stomachs become more sensitive.
2. Beagle’s Chewing Style
Not all beagles chew in the same way – some are aggressive and will devour their chews within minutes, while others may have learned to be more gentle with them.
Be considerate of their chewing style before choosing an appropriate dog chew for them.
Chewing styles may also change over time, so what was once considered suitable for them may not be the case as they get older.
3. Ingredients
There’s absolutely no reason why your beagle’s treats and chews should contain ingredients such as food coloring or other harmful chemicals to make them look more appealing.
Your beagle doesn’t care about appearance, and neither should you!
Always try to opt for a natural chew with ingredients that are not toxic to dogs – you’d be surprised what you find when you take a closer look at the labels!
4. Size of Chew
The size of the chew should be appropriate and in proportion to your beagle.
With very large chews that are edible, beagles are unlikely to stop until they are completely demolished.
They should be closely supervised, with the chew taken away temporarily to prevent excessive consumption in one sitting (which can give them an upset stomach).
5. Quality
The quality of the chew is as important as the type of dog chew you choose for beagles.
You need to be certain that chews are safe and suitable, otherwise, they may cause discomfort or even worse – serious health problems or dangers.
6. Durability & Price
As beagle owners, it can be quite difficult to justify spending a fortune on chews and toys that you know won’t last very long.
Whenever we look for something suitable for our beagles, durability is a top consideration when factoring in the price of chews.
Important: As beagles tend to be aggressive chewers, it’s extremely important that they are supervised whilst chewing any item that can be swallowed whole or bitten off in large chunks, particularly bones or anything that can splinter.
15 Long-Lasting Chews for Beagles
Having spent many years and thousands of bucks on chews, here are our top recommendations on the longest-lasting chews for beagles.

One of our beagles has been chewing on this medium-sized yak (on and off) over the last three days…!
Note: Yak chews have a very smokey flavor and smell, and can cause a stinky mess when chewed on soft furnishings!
2. Bully Sticks
The first time we found out what bully sticks were, it did make us chuckle a little!
Bully Sticks (aka bull pizzles) are one of the best chews for beagles when purchased from a reputable brand that provides quality ingredients.

5. Nylon Chews
Standard Nylon Chews are one of the most durable that you will find, however, beagles can often get bored if they are unable to make any progress with them.
The Benebone Wishbone is without doubt the best nylon chew out there.

9. Elk Antlers
Elk Antlers are great for aggressive chewers such as beagles, and will last a very long time if you can keep them interested in it!

Once they have finished a chewing session, put the antler somewhere out of reach and take it out again on special occasions – they’ll be more likely to view it as a valuable chew this way.
10. Cow Hooves
Cow Hooves make great long-lasting chews for beagles, however, they should be given on a rotational basis due to being high in calories – particularly if the hooves have been filled with a tasty treat!

How Often Can I Give My Beagle a Chew?
We all know how much beagles love their food and treats, which is why it’s important to limit the number of chews they are given and help prevent unhealthy weight gain.
- For indulgent chews such as Yaks Milk or Cow Hooves, beagles should only be given these once a week (whilst supervised) and they shouldn’t finish the whole chew in one sitting.
- Less calorific chews like Oxtail that are 100% natural can be given more often, but certainly no more than once a day.
- For Kongs filled with bananas (or other healthy fruits or vegetables) – fill your boots!
It’s important that beagles always have access to fresh water during chewing, as it can be thirsty work for them!
Are Dog Chews Safe?
Generally speaking, most dog chews will be perfectly safe to give to your hound, so long as you have selected an appropriate chew and are supervising them.
Some dogs can be sensitive or allergic to certain types of animal skin and cartilage, preservatives, or additives, leading to temporary problems such as diarrhea.
The more serious issue is your dog swallowing a large piece of chew. It could get stuck in their esophagus or other parts of the digestive tract, requiring urgent medical intervention.
It’s important beagle owners are aware of the risks associated with dog chews and treats, particularly those that are labeled as long-lasting as these tend to be more likely to break teeth, splinter, or be very difficult to digest if swallowed in large pieces, and can cause certain health issues for beagles.
We highly recommend that every beagle owner has adequate pet insurance in place for their beagles, as they are highly likely to get themselves into trouble due to their relentless chewing habits.

Should My Beagle Be Supervised Whilst Chewing?
If there is any chance your beagle may try to swallow their dog chew whole (or bite off a large chunk), then it’s important you are present and supervising at all times.
As well as a potential choking hazard, some beagle chews can be toxic if swallowed, or can cause a blockage in their intestines.
Ideally, you should always watch your beagle when giving any type of chew to ensure this does not happen, or to be able to handle it immediately if a problem arises.

Wrapping Up Long-Lasting Chews for Beagles

wow! Thank you for letting me know about the beef bones. My beagiler is a mill dog and has a very sensitive tummy.
Hey Christine, you are very welcome! Glad to hear your pup has a healthier alternative to regular dog chews. Just be sure to give raw (uncooked) bones and supervise at all times. Bones are great, but like all long-lasting chews they can cause problems for aggressive chewers if they bite off large chunks!
